An Atlantic Odyssey and a worldwide news headline story.

Chris Gomersall

Fulfilling a lifetime's dream, our intrepid Photography Expert Chris Gomersall set out on the expedition ship MV Hondius to record the fabulous bird and marine life of the southern Atlantic Ocean. In this presentation, Chris will showcase stunning images from this once-in-a-lifetime voyage, but we cannot overlook the world headlines generated by this voyage.

The expedition ship MV Hondius became known for all the wrong reasons, due to the hantavirus outbreak, which in itself is an incredible story which Chris will elaborate on in a factual and sypathetic manner to the victims of the outbreak.

The annual repositioning cruise operated by Oceanwide Expeditions is legendary  among seabird enthusiasts, world bird listers and extreme travellers.

The itinerary was to take in to South Georgia, Gough Island and the Tristan  da Cunha archipelago, Saint Helena, Ascension Island, finishing in Cape  Verde.

As Chris says "We were expecting to see a number of rare endemic birds, up to  fifty species of tubenose (albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels), many  cetaceans and plenty of other marine wildlife. It was a trip that  demanded some high capacity memory cards and a couple of the biggest SSD  hard drives available. And it did not disappoint."

This  presentation will mainly concentrate on the amazing wildlife encounters  and photography opportunities of the voyage, but will make reference to  what it felt like to be caught up in this extraordinary world news  event and the responses of the passengers and crew.

Chris is a long time friend and favourite of the platform, he presents exceptional well researched talks and his photographic knowledge and skills are top drawer, we recommend attanedance to a wonderful presentation  - even if seabirds and the great oceans are not your first love you will be enthralled be this talk.
